It’s National Mocha Day!
September 29 is the favorite day of the year for many coffee maniacs in the United States because two holidays dedicated to coffee are celebrated on this day. One of them is the National Mocha Day!
Cafe mocha, also known as mocaccino, is an American variant of a cafe latte that originated from Yemen. It is a coffee beverage based on espresso and steamed milk which contains chocolate. Typically sweetened cocoa powder is added, but some variations contain chocolate syrup, dark or milk chocolate. Sometimes cafe mocha is referred to as hot chocolate with espresso added. This beverage was so named after the town of Mocha in Yemen which is famous for having been the major coffee marketplace for about 300 years. The Mocha coffee bean has a distinct flavor and a notably chocolate taste. Hence the term mocha was extended to mean any coffee with chocolate taste.
To celebrate the National Mocha Day, indulge yourself with a cup of delicious cafe mocha. I’ve listed down five ways on how to make this yummy treat.

Peppermint Mocha reminds me of Christmas. During this time of year, I love all things peppermint and chocolate. Whether it’s in brownies, candy, cookies, cake, or in this case, coffee, I have a hard time turning this down! This chocolaty and minty java is both a comfort and refreshment in a cup, especially in this chilly weather. Starbucks only offer this during the Holidays, but with this recipe, you can enjoy it anytime of the year.

Red Velvet Mocha
Who could say no to hugs, kisses and a cup of red velvet mocha? We usually see the red velvet flavor in cakes. It’s a moist and fluffy layer cake paired with buttermilk. But today, I planned to ditch the classic for this recipe. Instead of moist and fluffy, today’s red velvet is a rich and warm liquid. Red Velvet Mocha, everybody!

Hazelnut Mocha
Coffee, hazelnut and chocolate – does it get any better than this combo? This winter warmer will redefine the traditional hot mocha recipe as hazelnut flavor joins the richness of cocoa and espresso and form a luxurious sipper. I’ve tried both the hazelnut-flavored coffee powder drink and the homemade hazelnut mocha and I must say that this combo is one of the best-tasting coffee I’ve had.

Cinnamon Mocha is another special early morning beverage you can make at home. If you love coffee, chocolate and cinnamon flavors, you have to give this a try. The aroma of cinnamon and cocoa makes this mocha hard to resist. My idea of making this actually started when I had a taste of Goya’s Everyday, which is a chocolate powder drink in double chocolate with cinnamon flavor. I did a little tweaking by turning it into java.

Brown Sugar Mocha
One of the best-selling flavors we had at Breen is the Brown Sugar Classic. It’s a milk tea with a brown sugar drizzle at the side of the cup. If you know Tiger Sugar, The Alley and Xing Fu Tang, you’ll know what I’m talking about. So I wonder how it’s gonna be if we make a coffee version of this drink. I created a mocha or chocolate latte with brown sugar syrup and surprisingly, it turned out great.

Cocoa Puff Mocha
One of the chefs that inspires and lifts the culinary side of me is Christina Tosi. Just like any other fan, I tried imitating her cereal milk but my imagination didn’t stopped there. If Christina Tosi’s cereal milk can be transformed into soft serve and panna cotta, mine turned into a mocha. So I soaked Cocoa Puffs into a bowl of milk and gave it a kick of espresso. Who would have thought that Cocoa Puffs Mocha would be a thing?

Iced Chocolate Chip Mocha
For those who are not a fan of hot coffee, well, I’ve also made an iced chocolate chip mocha for you. Whenever I’m in the mood for having Starbuck’s Java Chip or Seattle’s Best’s Javakula, I choose to stay at home, brew espresso, make ice cubes, bring out chocolate chips and create my own iced chocolate chip mocha. I couldn’t think of a better way to recognize chocolate chips than by putting them in a coffee drink.

Wintermelon Mocha Tea Latte
On today’s food trend, there’s a battle between iced coffee and milk tea. I’m actually a fan of both so you can’t force me to choose between the two. That’s why I mixed them. Yes! You heard it right. And the outcome is fantastic! But instead of iced, I took their hot version. I had hot wintermelon-flavored milk tea and chocolate-flavored coffee combined together. It’s so good. We’re offering it now at Breen Milk Tea.
