The Heart of Baguio City

I bet your first time in Baguio also has an itinerary that includes the famous parks in the summer capital. The wonderful thing about having your vacay in Baguio is that you don’t have to be a serious outdoor junkie to enjoy what the city has to offer. The city is lucky to have lush foliage and open spaces for locals and tourists to explore and enjoy nature to its fullest. Here are some of the popular parks in Baguio, which visitors are welcome to visit.

Dubbed as the “mother of all parks” and listed among the popular tourist spots in Baguio City is Burnham Park. The park is named after Daniel Hudson Burnham, an American architect and urban planner, who also laid the plans and design for Baguio City.

A large portion at the center of Burnham Park is the century-old Burnham Lake, which is one of the features that makes the park iconic and historic. It isn’t just a leisure lagoon because there are actual fishes, such as koi, tilapia and carp, swimming underneath. The color of the lake doesn’t seem appealing when we got there. I don’t know if it’s because it was raining when we got there or if it is its natural color.

The lake isn’t just a simple man-made lagoon that visitors can sightsee. People can also enjoy boating in this serene body of water. With rental boats available for a small fee, a group can glide over the calm waters, creating memories amidst the cool Baguio breeze. A boat can accommodate up to eight persons, which is big enough for a family or a group of friends. Kids will definitely have fun because of the quirky yet cute designs of each boats.

If boating is not for you, you can try other activities that the park has to offer, which are skating and biking. Just beside the lake, there are lots of bicycles for rent at a very reasonable price. Locals and tourists alike seem to enjoy this activity even when it was raining. Meanwhile, at the south of the park, a skating rink is situated for those who like to skate. There’s also an amusement park with roller coaster here.

Aside from the lake, Burnham Park is also proud to have healthy greenery that serves as a breather from Baguio’s urban setting. Apart from the trees and bushes that surround the lake and along the sidewalk, the park has three sections that are actually intended for nature. The Orchidarium grows different kinds of orchids and flowers. Sunshine Park is where flowers and plants that only grow in cold climate can be found. The Rose Garden is obviously for roses and the dancing fountain.

On the other hand, horseback riding is the main activity in Wright Park, hence, it is sometimes mistakenly called as Ride Park. The park is named after Governor Luke E. Wright who ordered architect Daniel Burnham to develop the place for American soldiers and civilians alike to have an area for recreation and leisure. Today, the park has a playground and open space for those like to have picnics.

Tourists, who visit Wright Park, also get a glimpse of The Mansion, which is just across the park. The Mansion is the official summer palace of the president of the Philippines. Older than the city itself, it was originally built as the seat of power of Governor Generals during the American Occupation. There’s nothing much to do here except from having a picture that will serve as a proof that you’ve been here.

Mines View Park

Mines View Park is also a destination in Baguio that one will easily recognize. But compared to the earlier examples, this is more of a view deck since it is set on a cliffside. It’s a place you shouldn’t miss as you’ll get a priceless view of the outskirts of Baguio and the rest of Cordilleran region from here. However, the observation deck only has a limited size so it could get very crowded during peak season.

There isn’t much activity to do in Mines View Park but this adorable St. Bernard dog caught our eyes. As dog lovers, we had to take a photo with him even if it costs 50 pesos. I thought the dog was enjoying the tourists but as I watched him after our photoshoot, I realized that the dog was exhausted and didn’t seem to be healthy. Instead of joy, I felt sympathy and regret for supporting this business that coerce the dog to work.

Even if it was raining, we didn’t miss the chance to get dressed in native Igorot clothes. We availed this set of loincloth, skirt, cape, headgear, necklace, spear and flower basket at Burnham Park but I believe that Mines View Park and Wright Park also have local photographers offering these costumes for photo-taking. They will also give you time to wear it within the park for as long as you want.

Strolling and discovering the parks of Baguio can be fun but tiring. It’s a good thing that these parks has an array of food stalls outside. You’ll easily find them at Mines View Park and Wright Park. It’s more likely that you’ll see food vendors inside, too, especially in Burnham Park. And since we’re in Baguio, I bought something that this city is known best. The Strawberry Taho definitely warmed my tummy amidst the chilly weather.
