Barako Haus: Home Of The Philippine’s First Civet Brew

During thesis terms, we all have this certain place where our group gather, spend our study sessions, research, write and discuss our thesis together. For us, it is Barako Haus, located just a few steps away from DLSU.

It is our group’s favorite hangout spot because the cafe is quiet and spacious. The dining area is comfy to stay at, not to mention that the restaurant is air-conditioned. They allow us to stay for hours during our break time. There was even a day when we spent our breakfast then lunch here.

I first picked a coffee that I am familiar with, which is a cappuccino brewed with barako beans. They call it Barakoccino here. As expected, it was strong yet wasn’t too bitter. It has natural sweetness that came from the bean itself. My thesis mates were wondering why I finish my coffee quickly. It just felt so good, especially that I drank it when I only had three hours of sleep. Moreover, I want it to enjoy while it was still hot. With an amazing coffee like this, I couldn’t be like them who consume their coffee for hours. Anyway, that’s a nice latter art right there.

Sibet Choko

It was my first time drinking coffee made with civet coffee beans and I didn’t feel that I was consuming a drink infused with a feline’s poop. For those who don’t know, Sibet Choko is extracted from part-digested coffee cherries eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet. Honestly, I couldn’t identify the difference of the notes to kapeng barako at first. But I realized it was stronger, earthier and more aromatic after a few gulps. It was a lovely aroma. It was also rich in chocolate. I can still taste it from my palate during the rest of the day

Mangga Tsoko

While I agree that the coffee shop brews great hot coffees, I don’t think their specialty extends to their non-coffee section. For this Mangga Tsoko, it was obvious that they just used a powder mix for this drink. The mango wasn’t compatible. It was topped with whipped cream and rice crispies, which are the only things I like about this drink. I tried the other non-coffee drinks as well during our next visits but there wasn’t special with them. Perhaps, I should go back to their coffee drinks and try their Frappinoy, their version of frappes.

Choco Caramel Cake

This slice of Choco Caramel Cake was already on the table by the time I arrived so I wasn’t sure if this is really how it was presented. Instead of the usual triangular cut, the cake is sliced into rectangle, which is refreshing to look at since it was different. It was my thesis mate’s order but, thankfully, she allowed me to have a taste of this delight. Mixing caramel and chocolate can give an exaggerated sweetness but the whipped cream acted as a balancer. I was surprised that it just had the right sweetness. I love that the cake part was moist, too.

Eggmusal

As a cafe that isn’t afraid of going extra, Barako Haus also offers scrambled egg meal. It may have no rice but it has this some sort of a bread. They even opted for a flat bread instead of the usual soft bun or pandesal for this. This alternative was just alright. The scrambled egg with ground meat was flavorful. It could be fluffier though. However, the presentation wasn’t wise. I hope they chose smaller plate for this so the serving wouldn’t look small. Well, the serving was actually small for its price and for my tummy.
