As we wait for our order, we noticed something inside our water. Is that a dirt?

Ooh! That’s why their water is so cool. There was no need to order drinks as this was quite refreshing. If their water is that good, what more on their Shanghai cuisine. This is the time when we started to enjoy Modern Shanghai.
Modern Shanghai is a casual dining Chinese restaurant of the Bistro Group. It offers original home cooked recipes from appetizers to soups, from meat dishes to seafood dishes, from desserts to drinks. It provides a chill place with a Chinese vibe to eat. But unlike the other Chinese restaurants colored with either red or yellow, Modern Shanghai is simply painted with white, brown and black which puts every customer at ease.
As we drank our water, our orders finally arrived.

Let’s start with their signature Xiao Long Bao. In every Chinese restaurant, you will find this particular soup dumpling, but you will never find a Xiao Long Bao like Modern Shanghai’s. The flavor is so prominent. It comes out, attacks my palate and touches my soul. I appreciate that the exterior part was thick yet soft and delish. Filled with juicy meat and heartwarming savory broth, this Xiao Long Bao indeed made my day.

Did I just say that Modern Shanghai makes few of the best dumplings? The skin of the wontons may be thick but their fillings were big and savory. Apart from that, the hot broth was pretty good. There was so much flavor happening in this liquid that works well with the wonton. Their combination was overwhelming which made us order another one. I think, it’s also great to have the one with noodles. I’ll try that next time.

As for our appetizer, we tried their Chicken Feet, a dish that both Chinese and Filipinos know so well. Its taste is not as intense as most Chicken Feet I’ve tried, but it was much stronger, instead. If you know me well, you would be aware that I’m not really a fan of chicken. But the way they cooked the chicken and the way they mixed it with sweet and sour sauce was incomparable. I can’t explain how great the flavor combination was because all I know is that my palate loves it. Although each piece was sliced small, they were chunky. Despite of the sauce, I’m getting that light crisp under the sweet and sour coat.

Uhmm, what’s garoupa? Oh nevermind! Just eat this one! I’m not 100% familiar with the fish. Obviously, I never had it before. Its flesh is firm and flaky. The taste is mild with a hint of lobster. It’s totally different. One thing that adds to its rate is the plating. The fish still stands as if it’s still gliding. It’s also nice that they separated the fish contents so without much effort in deboning, we enjoyed this garoupa.
Deep Fried Squid with Spicy Salt and Pepper
Attention! This deep-fried squid is a must-try. No, I’m not biased just because I love seafood. If ever I hate squids, I would still love this. It is that good! I got the crunch and munch for lunch all bunching up in my mouth. I was also surprised on the tenderness of the squid inside. The touch spicy salt and pepper to the crunchy fried squid was splendid. Dip it with its accompanying vinegar and it will be more than that.
Sauteed Sliced Beef with Scallions
Modern Shanghai aims not only to give flavorful meals, but also, healthy meals. Sauteed Sliced Beef is an example because the dish comes with a nice amount of scallions. But the star was definitely the beef. Once you get that first bite, you’ll want to get back to the meat. It has a light touch of umami flavor from its sauce. You can also feel its freshness, especially with the addition of the vegetables.
Deep-fried Glutinous Dumplings
I’ve already memorized how buchi tastes like since it is frequented as a family snack. However, we still try it outside home, most specially in Chinese restaurants. We’ve tasted good and bad glutinous dumplings and Modern Shanghai’s belongs to the good ones. The finely mashed mung beans inside are sweet and earthy. The crust was just as great as the fillings. That exterior skin had so much crisp in it.
