How I Make Mexican Watermelon Coolers
It’s August yet it still feels like summer because of the scorching sun. The weather makes me want to devour cold refreshments from time to time. And I think this is a good time to create cold fruity drinks.
During summer, one of the usual drinks we have every lunch is melon drink because it’s the fruit of the season. Sometimes, we add condensed milk to make it creamier and sweeter like what we did with Coconut and Pandan Jelly Coolers. On the other days, we just add water and sweetener to make Agua Fresca. Today, we’re going to make the latter.
Agua Fresca is a Mexican street drink which means cool water or fresh water in English translation. If we have samalamig or jelly coolers in the Philippines, Mexico has Agua Fresca that are sold in jars along the streets. It’s simply composed of water and natural flavoring so it’s light and refreshing to drink. Common types of Agua Fresca are fruit, hibiscus, tamarind, chia and horchata.
I’m actually lucky to still find watermelon because their season in my country is usually from April to July. For bland ones, Watermelon Agua Fresca can be a solution to utilize those watermelons.
1. Prepare all the ingredients needed.
- 4 cups watermelon
- 1 cup sugar
- 4 cups water
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- mint leaves
- ice
2. We prefer seedless watermelon for this but if we got the one with seeds, remove them after slicing into cubes. Just remove as much as you can because I realized that this isn’t a fun thing to do.
3. Place watermelon cubes, sugar, water and lime juice and blend.
4. Put ice and mint leaves in pitcher or glass.
5. Pour watermelon juice into the pitcher.
6. Your Watermelon Agua Fresca is now done and ready to be served.
