How To Make Tuna Apple Pie
It’s the 44th day of quarantine period in our region and I’m already dreaming of Jollibee’s famous pie, the tune pie, and McDonald’s classic pie, the apple pie. I wish I could grab those hot and juicy goodness covered with crispy crust again. They’re still building the first McDonald’s in town. Jollibee Pinamalayan is offering frozen goods of their products and sadly, the pies aren’t part of the menu. We had frozen Chicken Joy and shanghai rolls though. But we’re still craving for the pies.
So for the meantime, I’ll be making homemade tuna apple pie at home to ease these cravings. I decided to combine tuna and apple because I always believe that these two are perfect pairings. Gosh! You should try Tuna Apple Sandwich. But today, we’re having a pie. But instead of pockets or turnovers, I’ll bake a big round pie with lattice top. Yep! This reminds me of vintage time. Let’s do this!
1. Prepare all the ingredients needed.
For the tuna apple filling:
- 360 grams tuna
- 1 apple
- 1 onion bulb
- 1 garlic head
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- salt
- pepper
For the pie crust:
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1cup margarine
- 6 tbsp ice water
2. Make the crust by starting with flour, sugar and salt combination.
3. Scatter a cup or 16 tablespoons of margarine into the flour mixture and mix until crumbs form.
4. Gradually pour cold water into the dough while mixing.
5. Mix until well-combined. Do not knead at this point.
6. Place in a bowl and cover with damp towel. Put it in the fridge and chill for at least an hour.
7. While the pie dough is in the fridge, we’ll cook the filling. Chop the onion and garlic.
8. Dice the apple.
9. Saute onion and garlic in butter until fragrant.
10. Add flour, milk and sugar and mix. Season with salt and pepper. Let this simmer.
11. Turn off the heat and add the tuna flakes and apple dices. Set aside and let the fillings cool.
12. Get the dough. Divide it into two. Flatten the first one until it’s eighth of an inch thick.
13. Lay dough in pan.
14. Pour the tuna apple fillings.
15. Get the second dough and flatten it thinner than the first one. Cut into big strips.
16. Arrange dough strips on top of the pie.
17. Decorate the sides of the pie.
18. Since we don’t have oven today, I decided to use our turbo broiler. I preheated it for 5 minutes in 220 degree celsius.
19. If you’re using a turbo broiler, bake the pie in 150 degree celsius for 10 minutes.
20. Your Tuna Apple Pie is now done and ready to be served.
