Last Mother’s Day, I took my mom to the famous pizza and pasta house in my hometown, Pizzeria Milano. Last Father’s Day, we made our way to one of the most popular pizza and pasta house in Manila, The Old Spaghetti House. Honestly, it was purely coincidental. I didn’t plan to have a date with each of them over platters of pizza and pasta. We just follow what we crave during those days. And I don’t know but I felt that our day will go right with these Italian-inspired dishes. After all, dining dads will get a treat when they dine in TOSH.

The Old Spaghetti House, or simply TOSH, is an Italian-inspired chain restaurant in the Philippines that offers traditional family recipes. With a homey ambiance and lovely interior in a well-lighted room, the spaghetti house is perfect for simple dates or family bonding. Knowing that it is founded by a Filipino couple, I would like to say that I’m proud to be a Filipino, cliche as it may seem.

When I am with my friends, we always choose among their Trio Treats Menu since we get a great deal of food for less than a thousand pesos only. A choice of Trio Treat consists of a pizza, a pasta, an appetizer or salad and a pitcher of iced tea that is good for three to five persons already. In our last visit, we had the All Time Favorite, which includes Appetizer Sampler, Spaghetti Pesto with Grilled Chicken and Four Cheese Pizza, and we were eating speechlessly due to delight.

The Spaghetti Pesto with Grilled Chicken is my favorite among the pastas. The Grilled Chicken is a little bit burned which adds a note of bitterness and extra crispiness. I actually like it this way. It blends well with the pesto sauce of the spaghetti. On the other hand, the Meatballs Spaghetti in Meaty Trio contains the natural flavor of tomato sauce. There are plenty of meatballs which are big and beefy but the spaghetti was satisfying even without them.

The Four Cheese Pizza is great for those who are on a meatless diet. I am amazed that it stayed flavorful even without meat or vegetables. I can’t remember how many slices I’ve munched. All Time Favorite’s Appetizer Sampler presents three of TOSH appetizers – Fried Wonton, Calamares and Buffalo Chicken Tenders. I really appreciate the dips and enjoyed mixing and matching. Although the Appetizer Sampler gave us three dishes at once, I like the Nacho Supreme of the Meaty Trio more. The chips are a bit bland but thanks to the meat and veggies for making it delish. These toppings and dressing are present even on the bottom-most and last nacho chip.

In a separate visit, we tried another Trio Treat, which is the Seafood, because we believe that a TOSH Trio Treat will always be the best to order in this restaurant. And oh! Did I already say that the iced tea was the sweetest thing? Anyway, it’s Seafood Pizza gives me mixed reactions. Visually, it looks dull. You could already see that it’s not topped with seafood meat evenly. Once eaten, the flavors of mussels, shrimps, squid and cream dory can be felt in every corner of my mouth. The pizza itself is not too salty.

TOSH is organizing a pasta-all-you-can promo every now and then. But I noticed that the pastas served weren’t attractive. I only see plain noodles with sauce and barely with toppings on their buffet table. For me, it’s better to order a platter of your chosen pasta. Besides, customers have a wide range to choose from red sauce to white sauce pasta. My friends and I were already contented on the Tuna Carbonara Fettuccine from Seafood Trio Treat. It’s creamy and cheesy at the same time and it’s full of tuna meat.

I noticed that they have big serving for everything except for salad. It has the least expensive ingredients yet has the least serving. However, I admire the presentation of their food. Even for take out, they maintained a fine plating. In terms of taste, the Seafood Caesar Salad of Seafood Trio Treat didn’t disappoint. Both greens and seafood shouted freshness. This starter proves that seafood and vegetables make an awesome combination.

Clam Chowder

Aside from Trio Treats, Specialty Pasta, and Handicrafted Pizza, TOSH also has a wide selection for soups, heavy meals, sandwiches, desserts and drinks. My mom, being a soup person, tried their Clam Chowder and I, being a want-to-try-it-all person, took a spoonful. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best either. At least, it reached the right texture of a typical Clam Chowder. That’s the important thing. It’s thick yet creamy and has delicate flavor.
