How I Make Polynesian Mashed Taro

Another dish I discovered in the “Oahu, Hawaii” episode of Netflix’s Street Food: USA, after Poke, is Poi. Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish made from taro root. It is a starchy, paste-like substance that is typically made by mashing cooked taro root with water. Some people describe the taste of poi as earthy, nutty, and slightly tangy.

I instantly became attached to this dessert because it somehow resembles my ultimate fave, which is mashed potato, and it reminds me of a dessert from my home country, which is Ube Yam Jam. So, when it was time for our housekeeper to go to the market, I really asked her to buy taro for me to make this.

The taro in the Philippines is called gabi or singapor. I think it is a different type of taro compared to the one in Polynesia, but this is the closest thing we can grab here. We’ll still give this a go.
