RACKS: Flame Grilled • Falls Off The Bone

It’s the 359th day of quarantine period in our region and here I am wearing this wide smile because we’re in Manila! We’re in SM Mall of Asia! We’re in RACKS! And I’ll have my hands on these flame-grilled, fall-off-the-bone ribs again!

RACKS isn’t RACKS without the house specialty – the Classic Baby Ribs and the Classic Pork Ribs. I just think these two don’t need some explaining anymore so we’ll talk about the boneless flavored one. I don’t know if the ribs were grilled in the smoker or not but, either way, the smoky flavors remains in the sauce only. But I’m loving that sweet and smoky flavors combo. When it comes to the meat, it doesn’t disappoint. It’s super tender.

We’re so used to pork ribs and I’m glad that RACKS reminded us of the lusciousness of beef ribs. With just one scrape of a spoon, the meat easily falls off the bone. It got that beefy flavor and a hint of hickory smoked flavor that it is really irresistible. Every part is consistently flavorful, even the bones. If only we can eat the bones, we already did. The Mac N’ Cheese on the side has a blending smokiness while the Mashed Potato is pure but dull.

RACKS is a ribs master but I must say that they also offer one of the best steak I’ve ever tasted. They only have one steak on the menu and they made it the best. It’s small for a thousand-peso steak but it’s thick. It’s perfectly cooked in medium rare as we can still see the redness of the center. It’s tender and juicy. There are and they are the best part, actually. We chose their Gravy Fries and Corn and Carrots on the side and they nailed it.

Wow! This is a one big cut! The thick white fish filling easily melts in the mouth, which feels so great in the mouth. I could feel its freshness in every bite. The crust is really crunchy but it separates from the fish when we lift it. And I’m amazed with the chips. How can these thick cut fries have a hard and crispy exterior and soft potatoey interior at the same time? They are definitely keeping up the game since Fish & Co. is located opposite them at SM Mall of Asia.

I already tried the three soups of RACKS in different visits and it was the Clam Chowder that got my heart. It’s thick and creamy yet light and satisfying. The toppings weren’t as plenty as the New England-style chowder but I’m happy that I could still munch a few clams, which is rare to other restaurants. Its warmth is indeed comforting, making it a great way to start the meal. Homestyle Mushroom and Chunky Chili are good, too.

I’m not liking the Garlic Scampi Pasta. I know this is an oil-based pasta but it is just really bland. There’s no flavor except for chiliness. It has generous amount of shrimp and broccoli toppings but even the aroma of the garlic or the juices of shrimp didn’t touch the pasta. The scampi or shrimp doesn’t taste fresh. We also tried their Carbonara and I liked it better. It’s creamy and sweat at the same time. There’s no wonder why it’s their best-selling pasta.

Strawberry Milkshake 

Ending the savory Rack’s meal with something sweet is also a great idea especially when the dessert is a choice between the house favorite Mississippi Mudpie and their must-try milkshakes. As for the strawberry milkshake, I love that they retained the natural color of light pink because there isn’t really a strawberry milkshake that is colored fuscia. Despite of this, it remained tasty and sweet. The ice cream successfully brought creaminess to the drink.

Onion Brick

I was kinda disappointed with my first Grab delivery with RACKS. The Onion Brick is different from how it looks when it is served in restaurant. It is soggy and the the brick doesn’t stand strong. Storing it in a takeout box makes me realize how oily it is. Well, it has this distinct flavor and does taste better compared to the usual onion rings. Even though these onions are thinly slices, I think the rings are crispier. I’m just glad it is served with RACKS’ barbecue sauce.
