How I Make Shrimp Sushi
Representing Japanese cuisine ever since, sushi is a popular dish that reached every country in the world. There are four basic types of Sushi – Maki, Uramaki, Temaki and Nigiri. But for today, I chose to make Nigiri. Many people get confused about its difference to other Sushi kinds. Nigiri is a sushi made of a sliced fish on top of a cluster of oval-shaped rice.
This post was supposed to be a “how-I-make” post, but after going through the whole process, I think it should be an “I-try-to-make” post. I wasn’t prepared for how difficult making Nigiri would be. If you think Shrimp Nigiri is just a shrimp on top of a ball of rice, well, yes, it is, but the process isn’t as easy as it looks. I learned that it requires skill and technique to create this type of sushi. There are many important details to consider, such as the size and doneness of the shrimp, how the sushi rice is made, and how it is formed.
Without considering all of these, here I am, trying to make Shrimp Nigiri for the first time.
1. Prepare all the ingredients needed.
- Shrimp
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups cooked rice
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- Furikake
- Japanese mayo
2. Skewer the shrimps using wooden sticks or toothpicks to straighten shrimps.
3. Place skewered shrimps in a bowl of water and season with salt.
4. Let this boil.
5. Season cooked rice with sugar and rice vinegar.
6. After cooking the shrimp, let them cool. Remove the peelings and slice the underside of the shrimp to spread.
7. Get a small clump of sushi rice and form a barrel shape by rolling using the other hand.
8. Put a small amount of Japanese mayo in the sliced part of shrimp. This should actually be wasabi but I don’t have that.
9. Place shrimp on top of the molded rice.
10. Top with Japanese mayo and furikake.
11. Blow torch or broil in oven.
12. Your Shrimp Nigiri is now done and ready to be served.
