How I Make Sesame Donut Balls

I’m sure you’ve also come across the Binangkal recipe in the comment sections on Facebook. I don’t know when or how it started, but some Filipino netizens comment this Binangkal recipe on any trending post, regardless of whether the topic is serious or not, to joke around. I’ve seen it multiple times that I eventually decided to try cooking it myself.

I even searched for Binangkal on the internet since I wasn’t familiar with this bread. I found out that it is popular in Visayas and Mindanao regions. I also noticed its similarities to the Chinese Sesame Donut Balls. It is also known as smiling cookie because the crack on the surface resembles a smile.

And since the recipe is everywhere on Facebook, I’ll just follow the method and add my photos for each step.

1. Prepare all the ingredients needed.

  • 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup powdered milk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 piece egg
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds
  • Oil

2. In a large bowl, add the all purpose flour, powdered milk and baking powder. Combine and mix well.

3. In another bowl, combine the sugar, evaporated milk, melted butter and egg. Mix until well combined.

4. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture. Mix until well combined.

5. Knead for a few minutes until smooth and sticky.

6. Grab a small portion of the mixture and then roll into a ball.

7. Then, coat them with sesame seeds.

8. Deep fry the balls until golden brown.
