Brain-boosting Shake

In the July 2014 edition of Total Girl magazine, I saw recipes of shake and learned ingredients that are beneficial to our body. The article gave me the inspiration to make blogs about brain-boosting granolas and shakes, energy-restoring granolas and shakes, anti-aging granolas and shakes, fit-sustaining granola and shakes and flu-fighting granolas and shakes. I’m here to finish the list of super shakes!

Got a test this coming week? Make sure you get your fill of this nutrient-packed shake!

Blueberry

When I’m searching for brain-boosting food, different kinds of berries, especially the deeply colored ones, are on top of the list so I added one kind for our shake. Some of the antioxidants in blueberries have been found to accumulate in the brain and help improve communication between brain cells. Although I have here this beautiful blueberry puree since I always have them ready for the blueberry cheesecake that I’m selling, the fresh blueberries are the most recommended for this drink.

Grapes

I’m so glad that there are still remaining round-shaped fruits from last time’s New Year’s celebration. As we all know, tradition says that 12 round fruits must be prepared to welcome the new year with luck. I see this as an opportunity to make shakes so I’ll be healthy for the rest of the year. At least, that’s more believable, especially with the contribution of grapes to our brain. Grapes contain melatonin, which may help induce sleep, which may in turn support brain health and memory. Polyphenol found in grapes have been associated with improvements in cognition and neuronal function.

Prunes

Prunes, or even plums, are some fruits that, I’m honestly, not familiar with. But a friend who toured abroad presented us with a can of prunes so I immediately searched what it is and it’s benefits. Prunes are plums that have been dehydrated for preservation purposes. Sometimes called dried plums, prunes are deep red-brown with a chewy texture and a savory-sweet flavor. A study shows that older adults who consumed a diet rich in polyphenols, including those found in prunes, had improved memory and cognitive function compared to those who did not.

Pasteurized Raw Egg

What is this egg doing in my shake? I’m sorry. I just can’t ignore the benefits of egg to the brain. An egg has every nutrient we need to make a brain cell. Eggs yolks provide choline, which boosts your cognitive function and mood. They are rich source of several B vitamins, which are important for promoting proper brain function and development. Don’t worry. We’re using pasteurized eggs to get rid of the salmonella. Ordinary raw eggs are not allowed as it can cause food poisoning. Make sure that the eggs are pasteurized. After all, the blended egg brings custard-like texture to the shake.

Milk

Ever since we’re young, we already know how helpful milk can be to the brain and to our body. As kids, milk is presented by parents as one key for us to be smart. Therefore, as the liquid component of our shake, milk is added. It boosts the levels of glutathione, a potent antioxidant found in the brain. Glutathione may be able to help reduce health risks, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, because of its antioxidant defense system. A research shows that people who drink milk score higher on memory and brain functions tests.
