Food That Are Not For Cats

Unlike dogs, cats are picky eaters. Every kitty owners is aware of this feline behavior. Research says that domestic cats perceive toxic compounds of food at the molecular level, allowing them to detect off ingredients with incredible precision. This somehow explains why felines so often turn up their noses to particular food and medicines.

However, as responsible owners of domesticated cats, we must also be aware of the food that are safe and harmful for them.

Fish Bones

It’s a common misunderstanding that it’s okay to feed fish bones to cats. Cats should never be fed fish bones, whether it is cooked or raw, because in reality, their internal digestive organs are at risk, not to mention the pain fish bones cause to the cat’s throat, intestines and stomach. The cat could choke and eventually die because of this.

Milk

We see Tom of Tom and Jerry drinking milk from a bowl but that’s actually wrong. Most cats are lactose-intolerant as they don’t have the enzyme in their intestines to digest the sugar in milk. Their digestive system cannot process dairy foods and the result can be digestive upset with diarrhea. Apart from milk, cheese can also have bad effects to cats since it has dairy.

Liver

While my dogs are having the best time of their lives while eating liver, cats may only eat liver in moderation. Liver is packed full of vitamins A. Vitamin A toxicity can cause lethargy, weight loss, skin problems in the neck and front limbs, constipation, a dull coat, and in extreme cases, malformation of the bones, which can be seen as painful movements and abnormalities in posture.

Alcohol

For obvious reasons, alcoholic beverages and foods that contain alcohol can be dangerous to your cat. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, disorientation, trouble breathing, coma, and even death. If you think your cat has ingested even a small amount of alcohol, take her to the vet immediately.

Vegetables

The food that we regard as nutritious for ourselves is surprisingly not beneficial for cats. The simple reason for this is the cat’s carnivorous being. Even big wild cats may vomit after having a taste of vegetable. This indicates that a cat cannot survive on a plant-based diet. They will get sick and might die. After all, vegetables are boring.

Marijuana

We already made clear that leaves are off-limits to cats, that also includes marijuana. However, marijuana gave worse effects to cats. Once tasted or inhaled, your cat may experience extreme sleepiness or excitation, hypersalivation, dilated pupils, or low blood pressure. There may also be instances of low body temperature.

Yeast Dough

Yeast dough shouldn’t be fed to cats for a strange yet funny reason. It isn’t because of a certain element a yeast dough consist but because of the dough’s capability to rise. When the yeast dough is in a cat’s tummy, it may expand and can cause stomach to bloat and twist. On the other hand, baked bread is considered to be safe for cats.

Avocado

Avocados are nutritious. There’s no doubt about that. Its flesh is actually beneficial to cat’s health since it has loads of fiber. However, the other parts of the avocado, including the stem, peel, leaves and pit, are toxic to your kitty. So when feeding avocados to cats, make sure to peel them properly because they can’t distinguish which part is hazardous or not.

Grapes

One or two grapes probably won’t do any harm but a large amount can be toxic to felines, which poses a serious risk. Grapes are high on the dangerous list of food for pets and can cause food poisoning worse than chocolates. Grapes can cause sudden kidney failure on pets. The kidneys start to shut down, urine production stops and toxins begin to accumulate.

Mushroom

The safest kind of mushroom to feed your cat is store-bought ones since it is a good source of nutrients. Other types of mushrooms, like wild mushrooms or psychedelic mushrooms, can be toxic to cats. These mushrooms can cause digestive problems, liver damage, and even death. So it’s important to never give your cat any kind of mushroom that you haven’t checked first.
