Friends Fries: The Fun-flavoured Fries

When it comes to French fry food carts, there are three brands that come to my mind – Friends Fries, Kerrimo and Potato Corner. I can’t help but compare them since they have a good competition going on in our area. But today, I would like to talk about Friends Fries.

Friends Fries is a brand of Fruitas Holdings, Inc. After the company opened their first stall, which is Fruitas, on 2002 at SM Manila, Fruitas Holdings continued to expand their business and ventured the French fry business building the name Friends Fries. “Fast forward to 2017, FHI has more than 800 profitable stores across the Philippines and has 20 brands in its portfolio like Buko Loco, De Original Jamaican Pattie Shop and Juice Bar, Juice Avenue, Johnn Lemon, Black Pearl, Buko Ni Fruitas, Fruitas Ice Candy to name a few.

I actually find it hard to make a four-liner review on each selection of Friends Fries because they only have one product which only varies in flavors. But hey! Here I am!

Plain Salted

For me, the best French fry is when it is in its simplest form. Although powders improve its flavors, my fave will always be plain salted fries. I’m happy that Friends Fries offer them, which is very unusual for a French fry kiosk. We found out that Friends Fries and Breen uses the same frozen fries so we’re already sure that their fries will be good since I have full trust with that brand. Therefore, it all goes down to the way it is cooked. I wished it was  crispier though.

I like Friends Fries’ sour cream fries more than that of Kerrimo’s. Actually, the real sour cream dip exposes a lot of flavors aside from being sour. It has hints of sweetness from milk or cream, saltiness and umami taste. The Sour Cream and Onion of Friends Fries features all of those flavors. The fries might be soggy but I appreciate that there are still starches inside and crispiness outside. Compared to their cheese fries, this is more powdery, which is great.

Yay! They allowed us to put two flavors in their party cup. After all, it’s huge and worth the money. We chose cheese and sour cream. I’ll talk about the cheese flavor since I already shared my thoughts about their sour cream. Well, it’s different compared to the cheese fries of other French fry kiosk. I can taste a hint of sweetness to their cheese powder. I love that the cheese fully covers the fries. In fact, we had two consecutive party cups during this time.

Barbecue

They also offer Duo To Go, which has the same concept with Kerrimo’s. I was excited to have my barbecue flavored-fries on top of red iced tea but sadly, it wasn’t available at the time I visited their Xentro Mall Calapan branch. I still had the fries and as you can see the powder wasn’t scattered and didn’t fully cover the fries. It seems that the problem is the server and not the food because I think the Barbecue Fries is delish.

Pinatubo

Pinatubo is their latest flavor. I asked the staff about it and she said that its the flavor of De Original Jamaican Pattie Shop. Since I’m a fan of the said pattie shop, I gave it a try. It’s delicious. It has resemblance to barbecue flavor but this has more intense savoriness. It is also spicy. If I could remember, this was released when the Spice Fries was first offered in Jollibee. But I must say, Pinatubo Fries is better than Spice Fries.
